Amersfoort

On day two in the Netherlands, we took a train to Amersfoort, where our friend Theo lives.  He and his parents, Thea and Ruud met us at the station and took us on a guided tour of the area.  Amersfoort itself is a medieval walled town full of history and charm.  The gardens were full of autumn colour and the canals made it even prettier.  Ruud was keen to share his knowledge of the area and so back into the car and we had a fantastic day touring around, stopping for coffee or ice cream here and there.

See what I mean about the autumn colour?  I never get tired of it.

Kaiser Wilheim II lived here in exile (1920 - 1941) after abdicating...he was the last King of Germany as they then became a republic.  Not a bad little shack.

Our hosts were kind enough to stop for quite a while for us to see a ship come through the lock in the river, something they would see often but a first for us.
They are pretty serious about their veggie gardens in these parts....almost every garden had a patch.

It wouldn't be Holland without windmills....

In the countryside - Ruud, Kevin, Theo and me.....
