We left Rotarua around 9 am and headed for Lake Taupo. It was a lovely drive though beautiful green valleys and geothermal activity everywhere! It looks so odd to have steam coming out of the ground!! Just before Lake Taupo is Huka Falls. I love waterfalls, so naturally we had to stop here for a look. Nearby you could take a helicopter for a 10 minute scenic flight. Kevin suggested I go up as I hadn't been in a helicopter before. He has, and he thought I would enjoy it. So I put my fear of heights aside for, oh a good 5 seconds while I booked, then I panicked! You might think that's a smile on my face, but it's just pure terror!! In 10 minutes, we flew over the lake, the falls and the Craters of the Moon - a geothermal area that looks just like you'd imagine the surface of the moon. I did enjoy the ride and only felt nauseous once. To give you an idea of the szie, Lake Taupo is bigger than Singapore.
We headed back to Auckland via Hamilton. The road along the Waikato River was really spectacular but unfortunately we couldn't take photos - the road was very narrow with the river on one side and mountains on the other and no where to safely stop.
Back in Auckland, Kevin and I organised our bags for Christchurch the next day.
Bottom photo: Craters of the Moon, taken from the helicopter. They are not fenced off or anything, imagine bushwalking and coming across that!!
