Our Graduate....

After 4 years, our son Brett completed his studies last October and commenced as Graduate Mining Engineer with Barrick Gold at their Kanowna Belle gold mine operations.  He has long had a dream  of working in this field, preferably underground and now he has achieved it.  We visited Kalgoorlie for his graduation from the WA School of Mines this weekend.

Here he is in his regalia - Well done Brett!!

Brett took us for a drive to the mine he works at.  It's only 20 kms out of town so it's quite an easy commute for him.
 The Plant
 The stockpile
The Offices

One of the air vents (the green tube)
Haul truck about to disappear underground
This gives you an idea of the scale of the operation.

Kanowna townsite is just a few kilometres away from the mine.  It's hard to believe the population was once 12000 and there were 16 hotels!  Only a few ruins remain now, and some lonely graves.

Congrats to Brett - now that made for a great Mother's Day gift :)

I toured a gold mine years ago - mining is definitely done on a big scale - I remember how enormous the vehicles they worked with were.

Just got back from our trip down under and your part of the world is truly beautiful. I hope to return one day.

Thanks Debra :)

Thanks Jane! And you're right - it was a wonderful Mother's Day gift!

This gold mine is only small in relation to some others! One of the biggest is right on the edge of town. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to NZ and Australia and look forward to seeing your photos :)
